This visitor and education center for the US Fish and Wildlife Service tells the story of the Great Salt Lake and its important migratory route for birds. Located on the Great Salt Lake and temporary home to over 225 species of birds, the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is one of the largest bird refuges in the United States and an integral rest stop along the Pacific and Central Flyways.
This exhibition tells the stories of why birds migrate and why they use this unique refuge as an ideal resting point. It also explores how their features are indicative of the ways they feed, nest and seek cover. In addition to the interior exhibit, there are outdoor wayside graphics that interpret the natural beauty of the refuge.
The sweeping curved lines throughout the exhibit are meant to mimic a bird’s movement in flight and the landscape they use as a resting place. As visitors make their way up the ramp and down again they also play a part in a bird’s pattern of taking-off in flight and landing.
