Featured in the opening sequence of the movie About Schmidt starring Jack Nicholson, this $40 million history attraction that spans Interstate 80 in Nebraska is truly inspirational.
Visitors ride an escalator rising from the lobby to a giant movie screen and join virtual pioneers on a wagon train moving along the Great Platte River Road, following the course of the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails. The immersive environments trace the stories of 12 westward paths carved along the Platte, from those that opened up America’s West–Native American traders and Mountain Men, the 49ers, Pony Express, the telegraph, stagecoach, Transcontinental Railroad, and Lincoln Highway to today’s interstate highways and fiber-optic cables. The use of stone, rusted steel, and weathered painted wood were some of the materials used for graphics to integrate with each environment.
